Chair's statement
Welcome to the Sustainable Aviation website.
Our site is designed to provide visitors with key data and information about the strategy itself, our signatories, the work being done by the respective sectors that constitute Sustainable Aviation, as well as provide notifications about key events or reports that are of interest.
The attention on aviation’s environmental and sustainability performance has grown and developed since we started Sustainable Aviation in 2005. This will continue and we recognise that the industry will need to respond, through demonstrating commitment, action and performance improvements. Sustainable Aviation will be a critical part of that response, providing a forum for collaboration and shared delivery that involves airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service providers.
Since our launch, the number of signatories continues to grow and we now speak for over 90 per cent of UK airlines, airports and air navigation service providers, as well as all major UK aerospace manufacturers. We will continue to promote the principles of our strategy both within the UK and internationally.
Thank you for visiting and we hope you enjoy finding out more about Sustainable Aviation.

A strategy for the sustainable development of UK aviation
Sustainable Aviation is a long term strategy which sets out the collective approach of UK aviation to tackling the challenge of ensuring a sustainable future for our industry. A world-first, Sustainable Aviation was launched in 2005 and brings together the main players from UK airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service providers. We have produced three Progress Reports to date, the latest published in March 2011, following ones in 2006 and 2009. We will continue to deliver on the goals and commitments identified in the strategy, monitoring and tracking the practical cooperative work being undertaken by signatories to Sustainable Aviation as well as promoting our efforts both within the UK and internationally.
Sustainable Aviation is unique in the UK transport sector in representing a proactive coalition of airlines, airports, engine and airframe manufacturers and air traffic management, and established specifically to address sustainability issues. We are entirely focused on finding collaborative ways of improving our environmental performance and ensuring sustainable growth. We also lobby for balance in the policy debate to safeguard the future development of our industry which is crucial to the health of the UK’s island trading economy.
Sustainable Aviation establishes mechanisms for monitoring and regular reporting of progress toward a range of specific objectives.
Sustainable Aviation is committed to a range of goals.
Sustainable Aviation operates on a day-to-day basis through a Working Group comprising a number of different Work Streams.
Our governance structure has been created to allow impartiality and independence.
Sustainable Aviation is a non-profit making organisation. It is funded by its signatories who collectively contribute funding for its administration and operations as well as providing technical expertise.
