PRESS RELEASE

Sustainable Aviation welcomes the government announcement of funding support to develop low carbon, waste-based fuels for planes

“Sustainable Aviation (SA) – the coalition of UK airlines, airports, aerospace manufacturers and the air traffic service provider, which works to deliver cleaner, quieter, smarter flying – welcomes the Government announcement of funding support for projects in the UK to develop low carbon waste-based fuels for planes.

In 2014, SA published a Road-Map to demonstrate the opportunity to develop and introduce sustainable jet fuels. This analysis has shown that the use of sustainable aviation fuels in the UK can contribute to a reduction in CO2
emissions of up to 24% by 2050 for the aviation sector as well as significantly reduce particulate emissions.

Independent research conducted for SA indicates that a domestic industry for the production of sustainable jet fuels could provide between five and 12 sustainable fuel plants throughout the UK, generating a Gross Value Added (GVA) of up to £265 million a year by 2030 and support up to 4,400 jobs.

Since 2014, SA and the UK aviation industry has been working with UK Government and Innovate UK to review and enhance incentives and polices to realise the opportunities for sustainable jet fuel production in the UK.

In addition to this announcement, SA is hopeful of a further announcement from the Government regarding aviation’s inclusion in the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, to ensure that the opportunities from sustainable aviation fuels are fully realised.”
